There are several possible answers to the question when someone asks when they should remodel their home. These answers take into account either time of year, the age of the home, or wear and tear. Let’s drill down a little on each of these answers and help to give some direction to those of you wondering if it’s time to remodel or renovate your home. (Hint: If you’re wondering, the answer is probably yes.)
What is the best time of the year to remodel my home?
This answer varies according to location. I will answer according to where Revival Construction is located and where we do most of our home renovation and remodel work; in Austin, Texas. It is pretty tricky to answer in this part of the country. If you’ve ever lived in Texas, you know the saying, “If you don’t like the weather in Texas, just wait five minutes.” You also know, it’s not just a saying, but a way of life.
With this in mind, the best time of year to remodel is spring or fall. Granted, spring can get pretty hot pretty quickly, but you certainly don’t want to be without A/C for any amount of time in the summer. In Texas spring, at least earlier on, you can get by with a ceiling fan. Remodels and renovations sometimes require different portions of power or utilities be cut off for a little bit of time. The extreme summer and winter months in Texas make them less than ideal times to have this happen.
There is a catch here though. If you are taking an extended vacation during the summer, this can be the best time to take on your renovation project. You just want to make sure that you trust your construction company and that the lines of communication stay open throughout the process. Request photos and ongoing discussion about the progress and look of the project.
How old should my home be before I remodel?
This question is pretty easy on its surface: it doesn’t matter how old your home is. If you want to make changes to make your home more spacious, more comfortable or just look better, you can do that no matter how old the home. The more relevant part of this question to your remodel is how old your home is. The older the home, the more code adjustments may need to be updated and the more chance for additional rerouting of plumbing and/or electrical. But, we tackle this kind of project all the time, so it shouldn’t discourage you. Just be ready for the possibility of this cost.
How do I know it’s time for my home to be renovated or remodeled?
When the question is put this way, it usually means that someone is noticing wear and tear on their home and are wondering when it becomes ‘necessary’ to renovate. The answer is, whenever you feel it is time. As I mentioned earlier, if you’re asking the question, it’s probably time. If you start noticing fixtures that are outdated, showers and tubs that are on pre-fab that you find in a hotel and pre-21st century, water damage and the like, it is a strong indication that your home and your psyche could benefit from a refresh.
